Meetup and Networking

Attend a meet-up of your choice. Write about your experience, who you met, what you learned, and how you handled the event. What would you like to get out of your next meetup?

I attended Big Happy Trivia in Culver City at Jameson’s Pub. I picked a good night to attend because the night’s theme was Ladies in Music. The experience was fun, lively, and positive. The atmosphere was relaxed, friendly, and spirited. I arrived 30 minutes before the 8:30 PM trivia start time, so I could get a sense of the crowd who would be participating. It was a good-sized crowd. Most people knew each other. The crowd was diverse. Jameson’s was giving out prizes to the winners. There was a signup sheet to play. Trivia started with 5 contestants answering questions; if you got 2 questions wrong, you were replaced with another contestant on the list. The contest went on for about an hour and 12 minutes. I did not participate, though I should have; I knew most of the answers. However, I just wanted to observe and mingle. I engaged with a lot of people but had conversations with 2 ladies and 1 gentleman.

I participated in a conversation that 2 ladies were having about who was a better singer, Brandy or Monica. I interjected that the ladies were both correct because you cannot compare the two singers based on their different singing styles. They both are mezzo-sopranos, but one singer sings in a soulful tone while the other singer sings in a raspy, mellow tone. The ladies both agreed, and we continued to compare different lady singers. The more drinks that were poured, the more lively the bar became, but the atmosphere was animated, not rude or boisterous. Next, I met a gentleman who was full of himself but respectful. He claimed he knew all the answers and that he should have been up there. He kept on saying this throughout the game. I said there’s always next Tuesday, and we discussed what the next topic should be.

The staff of Jameson’s was friendly and engaging. They made sure that a waitress or waiter approached everyone; they even allowed the employees to play the trivia game. I learned a lot of little details about different female artists I didn’t know. I also learned that Jameson’s Pub is a nice meet-up spot. Downtown Culver City is a cool and safe area to hang out. I enjoyed myself. Maybe once a month I may visit Jameson’s Pub. I would like to incorporate myself into more activities at the pub on my next visit.
